Bad Ragaz Ring Method For Water Therapy Exercises

Developed in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, a team of physiotherapists created the Bad Ragaz Ring Method to develop a water-based strengthening and mobilizing resistive exercise model. This method combines elements of aquatic exercise techniques by German physician Knupfer in the 1930s, along with the research of American neurophysiologist Herman Kabat and his assistants Margaret Knott and Dorothy Voss from the 1950s and ‘60s.

In the Bad Ragaz method, patients use ring-shaped flotation devices to move in the water. During the appointment the client lays flat in shoulder- or waist-deep water.

Definition: A technique where the therapist supports the patient through a series of flowing movements and stretches designed to induce deep relaxation, increase range of motion, increase mobility of myofascial tissues, and improve muscle function. The technique is based on proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). The patient’s extremities, neck, and trunk are supported with a floatation device.

The Bad Ragaz Ring Method is commonly used with clients suffering from:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Spinal injuries
  • Head injuries and Parkinson’s disease.
  • Fibromyalgia sufferers may also find relief from their chronic pain by incorporating this form of treatment into their overall plan of care.
  • People with Back pain
  • People with generalized weakness

Resistance Training in the Bad Ragaz Ring Method

Training in the Bad Ragaz program include:

Passive Movements

Stretches back, muscles, and ligaments due to the buoyancy and viscosity of water. Good for arthritic patients who are tight from immobility.

Isometric Movements

Helps to maintain position and stability while using their core which strengthens muscles, ligaments, and targets the core.

Isotonic Movements

Helps to maintain position and stability while using their core which strengthens muscles, ligaments and targets the core while the therapist provides resistance with their body weight.

Isokinetic Movement

Provides graded resistance using your weight and the patient’s resistance because the patient uses his core to maintain his position.
